Making Espresso Coffee

Making Espresso Coffee imagerightThe term 'espresso' is often used for a type of coffee, but it is actually
the term for the brewing procedure. Espresso refers to a quick infusion of water through ground coffee using either a hob top or an electrical machine.

Making coffee using a hob top espresso maker
In the hob top version, also called 'Moka express' and sometimes
'Neopolitan', water in the bottom chamber is heated, the resulting pressure forces the water up through a filter containing ground coffee and following heating the coffee arrives in the upper chamber and is ready for pouring.

  • Fill the bottom tank with cold water.
  • Insert the funnel shaped filter into the tank
  • Fill the filter with fresh Douwe Egberts Roast & Ground coffee, and press it down gently.
  • Firmly screw the top of the coffeepot onto the tank
  • Put the coffeepot onto the source of the heat.
  • When the top of the coffeepot is full of coffee remove from the heat.
Making coffee using an electric espresso machine
The electrical models inject hot water through the ground coffee directly into a cup. In these machines, pressure is built up by a pump in combination with the coffee bed and the sieve. To build up this pressure the grind should be perfect, which not only means very fine but also with a certain particle size distribution. For espresso a dark roast coffee is normally used, and a cup can be ready in around 25 seconds..
